Hi, I’m Ruby. I’m a graduate student pursuing a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Instructional Design at UMass Boston. This website was created for the course “INSDSG 655: Project in Multimedia” (Fall 2025), taught by Rebecca Hogue.

Project Purpose

In this elective course, one of the learning objectives was to design, develop, and implement a multimedia project (website). Currently, the podcast does not exist as I have not started recording episodes. For now, I envision this website to start as a platform to brainstorm my ideas for the podcast called “Main Character Energy Podcast,” which will focus on career growth and discuss the literary concept of the “monomyth,” otherwise known as the “hero’s journey,” written by mythologist Joseph Campbell.

Project Requirements

For the project, I had to create at least 6 non-text assets. Here is a list:
  • 1) Image: I created a logo below. The logo is still in progress which is why I have not featured it on the home page just yet. One of my peer reviewers mentioned that they find it “clean and minimalist” and the other found the size “too small.” I’ll have to continue editing it and keep in mind that maybe that the text and image might be too small for some. For my color palette, I like white, red, and black, with pink and purple as secondary colors, so I may change the background color (though beige is actually one of my favorite colors, believe it or not).

Podcast Logo

This is the second version of the logo I created for my INSDSG 655. The first one had a black and white marble effect as the background.

  • 2) Audio (this is a link to a Youtube video without images): This was my first attempt at a podcast trailer. This was recorded using my phone and there were some awkward hiccups with bumping against my phone and I didn’t feel like my voice was super clear. After this experience, I finally caved in buying a Yeti microphone.
  • 3) Video: This video was an attempt at a video version of the podcast trailer. I changed the music and rewrote the script. Using my new external microphone and briefly editing using GarageBand boosted my confidence a bit in the audio quality. I used Canva for a different logo (pink clouds), Adobe Stock for images, gifs, and background music, and Camtasia to edit the video. I received valuable feedback from my peer reviewers, one of whom is an English professor so I value their comments a ton.
  • 4) Interactivity #1: I used created a Genially quiz about the “hero’s journey,” which is the literary concept that inspired the title of the podcast and tying the idea to career paths. I used a template on Genially and thought it turned out well. Not sure where exactly to put a quiz like this on a podcast site/blog, though. Maybe it would go under a blog post discussing a certain stage of the “hero’s journey.”
  • 5) Interactivity #2: Since social media can be considered as part of this asset type, it would be nice to include a link to trending videos. (As of this writing, there are 1,374 posts on the hashtag #theherosjourney on TikTok.) Also, I’m realizing that I should explain what “main character energy” actually means which was popularized on the Internet. The main difficulty is that I don’t have a TikTok account and don’t want to create one, so I’d maybe try to create a YouTube video since I do have an account. Here is a sample in the style of TikTok/YouTube reel video if I were to make one. It does not have any transitions since reels are usually very short. This “reel” is 21 seconds.
  • 6) Hyperlink: At some point, I want to create a separate resources page for website readers to learn more about the “hero’s journey.” I want the podcast to borrow from Christopher’s Vogler’s version of the “hero’s journey,” often found in screenwriting and movies. I would include a link to this interview from Film Courage’s YouTube channel.
